Find Your Perfect Color: Understanding Hair Coloring Levels

If you have warm undertones, opt for a 7N with golden undertones. If it’s your first time to give yourself a hair transformation, try to avoid drastic changes. A common mistake is deviating too far from your current hair level, whether lightening or darkening. Knowing your current level of hair color plays an essential role in determining your options.

Going For A Darker Shade

A color dye chart is essentially a tool used by hair professionals to navigate and communicate the wide array of hair colors. This chart categorizes hair colors into levels, usually ranging from 1 (darkest black) to 10 (lightest blonde). The purpose of this scale is to standardize the hair color process and make it easier to describe and achieve the desired hair color. If you plan on giving your hair a facelift, you might not think about this question – what color is my hair?

Is it damaging to reach a level 7 blonde?

Using the right products can extend the lifespan of your color, maintain its vibrancy, and keep your hair healthy. On the other hand, using the wrong products can lead to color fading, dullness, and even hair damage. Remember, toning is a chemical process, and if you’re new to it, make sure to follow the instructions carefully. It may be beneficial to do a strand test first to ensure you achieve the desired result.

Level 7 is an ashier "mousy" blonde since it has cooler undertones and more melanin pigment. If you cannot find a color that fits exactly what you’re going for and decide to make your own color by mixing tones, be cautious! Mixing a variety of tones that are opposite of each other can result in browning out. Browning out means that the hair color goes muddy and can make the hair appear dull. Also known in the business as a 7.3, Medium Golden Blonde brings warmth to flat shades which may otherwise be called ‘washed out’ or ‘mousy’. When the white hairs start appearing, 7.0s simply appear to have highlights.

Olive, medium, or darker skin tones often do not pair as well with platinum and icy blondes. If you’d like to avoid a super-high maintenance hair color routine, consider staying within a couple of levels of your natural hair color. As a general rule of thumb, it’s recommended to stay within two levels of your starting hair color level. The same holds true when darkening a hair color; the orange must be replaced if you wish to become a level 5 brown from a blonde. This process is called “filling” the hair, and I’ll talk more about it below with going down in hair color levels. After reading this guide, you should now understand how hair color levels work and how to choose between level 7 and level 8 blonde shades.

If you have cool undertones:

Before going to your hair appointment, it’s good to have a sense of your color level. If you have dyed hair currently, a new dye won’t lighten the previously dyed hair. Hair that has been bleached can be bleached again to make it lighter, but bleaching is very hard on hair. You might want to wait four to six weeks to protect it from further damage. I want my hair lighter, but I hate seeing any warmth, or brassy tones in my hair.

Understanding Hair Tones

This means that the underlining pigment of a level 5 is orange. Mind that we speak about the levels of color (depth/lightness), not hair color itself! If the colors distract you from determining your hair level, take a photo of your hair and convert it to black and white image. This simple hack will let you know how dark or light your current hair color is.

This is basically a toner that is applied to the hair before the level 3 brown is applied. I typically use a filler anytime I am dropping 4 or more levels. But hair that has been previously colored cannot be lifted AT ALL with permanent hair color. (This is why it is EXTREMELY important that you are honest to your stylist about having previous color on your hair). Otherwise you’ll apply the color and it will stay the exact same. Before I do any color service, the first thing I do is check the level of the natural hair color.

Lower levels can cover dark black and the darkest brown to reddish brown tones like mahogany and burgundy. For example, a deep brunette would be considered a level 3 because it reflects less light than a lighter shade of brunette. On the other hand, a platinum blonde would be considered a level 10 because it reflects the most light. Hair color is measured on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the darkest black and 10 being the lightest blonde.

It’s because you want to avoid over-moisturizing your locks or having protein overload. What you need for healthy hair is a balance of moisture and protein. That’s why you should take good care of your after you bleach it to help return it to a healthy state. Once the chemicals are inside the hair shaft, they will start to dissolve the hair’s melanin pigments.

Luckily, the confusing terms never caught on – and 7.0 remains the champion shade number in hairdressing. Most deep conditioners contain ingredients that moisturize your locks and keep frizz at bay. Here are some of the things you can do to maintain bleached hair. If you are doing an all-over bleach job, make sure that you start with the ends of your hair and leave the roots for last. The story of a shampoo bottle begins long before it arrives in your shower!
